Botox Injections and Other Botulinum Therapies

Typically used for aesthetic purposes to reduce the signs of aging, Botox is the brand name of a neurotoxin that, when injected into an overactive muscle, causes that muscle to relax. But the benefits of Botox go beyond beauty. It has proven to be extremely effective for the temporary relief of many neurological conditions, movement disorders, and their associated symptoms including migraine headaches and various forms of dystonia such as blepharospasms, torticollis, and hemi facial spasms.

Movement disorders are typically characterized by muscles that move uncontrollably, contracting and tensing for lengthened periods of time. This extended tensing of the muscles results in a series of abnormal postures and gestures that not only cause discomfort and disfigurement but in some instances, severe pain.

When injected directly in to these painful muscles, Botox can provide temporary relief from these symptoms. Toxins released through the injection send signals to the brain that cause it to stop releasing the chemicals that are making the muscles contract in the first place, essentially weakening the muscle and causing it to relax just enough to reduce the spasms and relieve or reduce the pain without completely paralyzing it. Botox can be a simple and virtually painless treatment that has been shown to help provide temporary relief from migraines and some symptoms associated with movement disorders for up to 6 months.

Our neurology specialists are pleased to discuss Botox treatment options and work with you to determine the best course of action to help manage your symptoms.
